Delhi AQI Today: The air in Delhi-NCR has once again reached dangerous levels. On Monday, a thick layer of smoke and haze covered the entire city, while today on Tuesday the air quality has been warned to reach ‘Severe’ category. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi’s average AQI was recorded at 309 at 4 pm on Monday, which falls in the ‘very poor’ category. Know the latest situation…
Effect of pollution increased due to lack of wind
Delhi’s AQEWS (Air Quality Early Warning System) has warned that the situation may worsen on Tuesday, November 4. The wind speed remained below 8 kilometers per hour in the evening and night, due to which the pollutants got trapped in the air. Due to the ventilation index being less than 6,000 m/s and the wind speed being below 10 km per hour, pollution is not able to spread. Due to this, layers of pollutants have accumulated over Delhi, due to which AQI can reach critical levels.
AQI crosses 400 in many areas of Delhi
The air condition in many parts of Delhi is very worrying. According to CPCB’s Sameer App, AQI was recorded at 400 in Burari, 390 in Wazirpur and above 300 at 23 monitoring stations in Delhi. These figures show that the air of the capital is no longer fit for breathing. The blanket of smog spread all around is not only reducing visibility but also increasing complaints of eye irritation and sore throat.
Delhi’s air is poisonous
According to the CPCB report, the level of PM 2.5 has reached 155 micrograms per cubic meter of air and the level of PM10 has reached 278 micrograms per cubic meter. PM2.5 are extremely fine particles that can reach the lungs and bloodstream. PM 10 are slightly larger particles, but they are also extremely harmful for breathing and eyes. Pollution at these levels can cause serious health problems to people with heart and lung disease, children and the elderly.
Why is the situation in Delhi dangerous?
According to experts, there are many reasons behind accumulation of pollutants in the air. These include burning of stubble in fields, emissions from vehicles and industries, dust from construction sites and the effects of cold, still air. All these factors together are making Delhi’s air a ‘gas chamber’.
What should Delhiites do to avoid pollution?
- Wear an N95 or KN95 mask when going out.
 - Avoid outdoor exercise in the morning and evening.
 - Keep air purifiers or indoor plants like snake plant, aloe vera in the house.
 - Drink as much water as possible and take a diet rich in Vitamin C, D and Omega-3.
