Delhi Pollution: After Diwali, the air of Delhi-NCR has become the worst in the last 5 years. Despite claims of green crackers, pollution levels increased significantly. Even after incidents of stubble burning have reduced, the air remains poisonous.
Delhi Pollution: This time, to save Delhi-NCR from pollution on Diwali, it was claimed that only green crackers would be sold, but in reality, the crackers sold and run in the name of green crackers caused a lot of pollution. People had to face a lot of problems on the second day of Diwali. After Diwali, Delhi’s air quality was recorded as the worst in the last 5 years. The level of PM 2.5 reached 488 micrograms per cubic meter on Tuesday morning, which is about 100 times more than the WHO limit.
Green crackers reduce air pollution by 30 to 50 percent.
Generally, stubble burning in winter is considered a major reason for Delhi’s pollution. Neeri’s Chief Scientist Dr. R.J. Karupadam said that if green crackers had indeed been burst, some improvement in the air would definitely have been seen. Scientists say that green firecrackers reduce air pollution by 30 to 50 percent compared to normal firecrackers. However, green crackers are not a new thing. Work on these has been going on for many years. NEERI tests the green crackers made by those firecracker companies before giving them license. But this investigation is done only at the time of getting the license. Subsequently, the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization monitors whether companies are actually making green crackers or not.
1,403 firecracker companies have the technology to make green crackers
So far, NEERI has handed over the technology of making green firecrackers to 1,403 firecracker companies across the country and has also given them training in it. Of these, about 125 companies are in Delhi-NCR. However, during investigation, crackers of about 25% of the companies were found to be of poor quality, due to which their applications were cancelled. At present it is not clear what is the share of firecrackers in the total air pollution.
