Delhi Police Mandates Uniforms At Jantar Mantar After Plainclothes Men Seen Beating Students At CJP Protest

The instructions to all units, issued by the Delhi Police Headquarters late Tuesday night, clarified that no police personnel deployed for duty at Jantar Mantar should be in plain clothes.

The videos have since gone viral on social media and the conduct was put to question. Sharing the video on social media, the CJP questioned, “Who are these goons in plain clothes, armed with sticks? Who have you hired to beat us?”

While the Delhi Police is responding to the protesters’ allegations, it has not yet officially commented on the allegations of plainclothes men wielding sticks.

CJP held a protest march to Parliament, Sansad Chalo, on Monday, the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament. The march led to scuffles at multiple locations, including Patel Chowk, near Parliament, after protestors started climbing barricades and the cops and RAF personnel, in turn, put up resistance.

The police personnel resorted to a lathi charge and tear gas shelling to disperse the crowd. The crowd too turned violent, resorting to stone pelting and vandalism. As many as 118 cops and over 60 protestors sustained injuries.

The matter reached the Supreme Court, which refused to hear the plea against alleged police brutality on student protestors urgently on Thursday.

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant said that the bench was not inclined to examine the video footage at this stage. On being pressed to hear the plea on Thursday, the CJI said, “We are not interested in videos; we don’t have time to watch. We don’t want to watch videos,” the CJI remarked.

However, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday directed the authorities to preserve all footage, videography and all other relevant records related to the alleged police brutality. The court also issued a notice on two petitions seeking a court-monitored SIT probe into the incident.
