Delhi-NCR Weather Alert Outlines Sudden Downpours And Strong Winds

Delhi-NCR and parts of Haryana are under a severe weather alert as a powerful Western Disturbance interacts with intense surface heat, raising the risk of sudden thunderstorms, cloudbursts, strong winds and frequent lightning during late evening and night hours.

Officials warn that these storms may develop quickly and without clear lead time, bringing brief but intense downpours that could flood low-lying roads, slow traffic and affect power lines. Vehicles in Delhi have already moved through waterlogged stretches during earlier heavy showers.

Delhi-NCR weather: Rare Western Disturbance fuels intense thunderstorms

Meteorologists report that this Western Disturbance has formed a rare closed cyclonic centre positioned over Punjab and Uttarakhand. The circulation behaves like a compact atmospheric whirlpool, pulling in moist air and lifting it rapidly, which helps trigger towering storm clouds.

This system is being energised by a strong jet stream, a narrow band of very fast winds about 10 kilometres above the surface. Acting like a high-level conveyor belt, the jet is pushing storm clusters southwards from the western Himalayas towards Delhi-NCR and further into Maharashtra.

Delhi-NCR weather: What is a Western Disturbance?

Western Disturbances are large storm systems that usually form over the Mediterranean Sea before travelling thousands of kilometres towards India. They are packed with moisture and are best known for bringing winter rainfall and snowfall to North India and the western Himalayas.

Under normal conditions they pass during December to February and help ease seasonal dryness. Encountering such a strong Western Disturbance during late May, when the region is in the pre-monsoon heat phase, is considered very unusual by forecasters and increases the risk of severe thunderstorms.

Region Expected impact
Delhi-NCR Thunderstorms, heavy rain, lightning, gusty winds
Haryana Severe storms and localised flooding
Punjab, Uttarakhand Core cyclonic circulation and intense activity
Maharashtra Storms driven south by upper-level jet

“Wow, what a well-defined Western Disturbance structure this is. It is very rare to have a Western Disturbance with this kind of closed cyclonic center. Currently, it is situated over Uttarakhand and Punjab. Delhi-NCR weather: Will the storm bring winter-like chill?

Many residents are asking if the weather will feel like a December spell once the rain begins. Western Disturbances normally cause sharp temperature drops and snowfall in the mountains, so people often link them with winter-like cold conditions.

Forecasters explain that temperatures in Delhi-NCR are set to fall noticeably, giving relief from the ongoing heatwave. However, the land surface has heated up for weeks, so the cooling will not last enough to mimic true winter. Instead, the clash between cold upper air and very warm ground air is what powers these severe thunderstorms.

Experts advise residents of Delhi-NCR and neighbouring Haryana to stay alert through the evening and night period, as storms can form quickly and bring intense rain, strong gusts and dangerous lightning that may briefly disrupt transport and electricity services across the capital region.
