Delhi gets its new police commissioner: IPS SBK Singh to assume charge tomorrow

New Delhi: Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer S.B.K Singh has been handed additional responsibility as Commissioner of Police, Delhi, in a move announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Wednesday.

A 1988-batch officer from the AGMUT cadre, Singh currently heads the Delhi Home Guards as Director General. His appointment, approved by the Competent Authority, will take effect from August 1, 2025 (tomorrow) and remain in place until further orders. The decision, issued through an official notification from the MHA, forms part of a wider administrative reshuffle in the capital’s police leadership.

Years of extensive policing experiencing

Singh, who has served in various senior roles across India, is recognised for his extensive experience in policing, crisis management and organisational reforms. His arrival at the helm comes at a time when Delhi is grappling with rising cybercrime, organised criminal networks and heightened political sensitivities.

Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora retires today

The appointment comes as Sanjay Arora formally retires today, 31 July, concluding his tenure as Delhi Police Commissioner without the widely speculated extension. His farewell ceremony is scheduled at the New Police Lines in Kingsway Camp. Arora, who is expected to be assigned a new high-level role, steps down after nearly three years at the helm.

An IPS officer of the 1988 Tamil Nadu cadre, Arora took over in August 2022, succeeding Rakesh Asthana. His stint was defined by significant law and order challenges, including gang wars, extortion rackets, cybercrime cases, bomb scares, two explosions in Rohini, and the infamous Shraddha Walkar murder case. He also oversaw probes that led to the arrests of senior AAP leaders, including former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and ex-Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.
