Investigation revealed that a girl from Imphal was in contact with Umar for a long time. After questioning, she admitted that she used to attend his ‘informal sessions’ as he was a senior faculty member. However, she said that she never accepted his radical ideology.

The agencies say naming the girl ‘Mariam’ initiated soft conversion—a process in which a person’s religious identity is first changed and then the ideology is gradually inculcated.
