The story of the Dehri Assembly has been full of dominance of Muslim leaders, upliftment and independent victories for 70 years. From the reign of Mohammad Ilyas Hussain to the difference of 464 votes in 2020, know how Dehri became one of the most interesting seats in Bihar.
Dehri Assembly Elections 2025: The political story of Dehri assembly constituency, which is considered to be the eastern entrance to Rohtas district, is different from any other seat in Bihar. Out of the total 17 assembly elections held from 1951 to 2020, 10 times Muslim candidates have won the victory here. This figure not only reflects the political influence of Muslim leaders in the region, but also highlights Dehri’s unique demographic structure and voting patterns.
Mohammad Ilyas Hussain: ‘Badshah’ of Dehri
The political discussion of Dehri is incomplete without the name of Mohammad Ilyas Hussain. He has won five times from this seat, which is a record for any leader. The most important thing is that he won three consecutive (hat -trick) in 1990, 1995, and 2000. Ilyas Hussain’s political journey was with various parties. However, his membership was canceled in 2018 after being convicted in corruption case, after which the by -election was held in 2019.
- 1980: First win from Janata Party (Secular)
- 1990, 1995: on Janata Dal ticket
- 2000, 2005: on RJD ticket
- 2015: Wins RJD for sixth time
70 years of rule of only 9 leaders
Another interesting feature of Dehri assembly constituency is that only 9 leaders have represented this seat in 17 elections. This is a proof that voters here have been choosing them again and again by trusting their leaders.
Three times winning leaders
- Basavan Singh: 1951 (Socialist Party), 1957 (PSP), 1977 (Janata Party)
- Abdul Qum Ansari: 1962, 1967, 1972 (from all Congress)
Husband-wife double win
The most interesting chapter in Dehri’s political story is of 2005 and 2010. Independent candidates won these two elections, and that too by husband and wife. In 2005, Pradeep Kumar Joshi defeated RJD’s Mohammad Ilyas Hussain by 43,277 votes as an independent. Pradeep Joshi got 70,558 votes, while Ilyas Hussain got only 27,281 votes. At the same time, in the 2010 elections, Jyoti Rashmi (Pradeep Joshi’s wife) again defeated Ilyas Hussain, this time the margin of victory was 9,815 votes. Jyoti Rashmi got 43,634 votes. Jyoti Rashmi is the only female MLA to win from Dehri.
Congress’s golden period and then collapse
The Congress had a strong hold on Dehri in the 1960s to 1970s. From 1962 to 1985, the Congress won five times. But after 1985, the Congress never won again from here. The Congress won 1962, Abdul Cum Ansari in 1967, Riyasat Karim in 1969, Abdul Qum Ansari (third time) in 1972 and then Khalid Anwar Ansari in 1985.
BJP’s first win in 2019 by -election
In the by -election after the disqualification of Mohammad Ilyas Hussain, Satyanarayana Singh opened the BJP’s account in Dehri for the first time on a BJP ticket. However, RJD returned to the 2020 election. From here, Fateh Bahadur Singh of RJD defeated BJP’s Satyanarayana Singh by a margin of only 464 votes and won the seat back. It was one of Bihar’s lowest difference victory.
Industrial history and economic aspects
The industrial history of Dehri has also been affecting its politics. In the 1930s, Dalmiyanagar, established by Ramakrishna Dalmia, once flourished as an industrial center. But in the 1970s, it was destroyed due to crime, robbery and labor movements. Today, small industries like saw mill, ghee processing, plastic pipes, and footwear are going on in Dehri.
2025 riot
Dehri is again in discussion in the upcoming 2025 upcoming assembly elections. After the victory of just 464 votes in 2020, this seat has now come under the category of swing seat. This seat is important for both BJP and RJD. The equations can be even more interesting with Prashant Kishore’s coming to the Jansuraj Party election.
