‘Deeply ironic that country with world’s worst human rights records lecturing others’: India rips into Pak at UN

New Delhi: India came down heavily upon Pakistan at the United Nations for its “hypocrisy” on human rights and slammed the neighbouring country for its long-standing support for terrorism. India also called on Pakistan to confront persecution and systematic discrimination of minorities.

Addressing the 34th Meeting of the 60th Session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Wednesday, Indian diplomat Mohammed Hussain said, “India finds it deeply ironic that a country like Pakistan with one of the world’s worst human rights records seeks to lecture others on human rights. Instead of spreading propaganda, Pakistan should confront the rampant state-sponsored persecution and systematic discrimination of minorities on their own soil.”

The Indian envoy conveyed New Delhi’s concerns about treatment meted out to minorities in Islamabad and neighbouring country’s failure to address internal human rights challenges.

Last week, Indian representative Kshitij Tyagi had slammed Pakistan at UNHRC session, for misusing the international forum to level “baseless and provocative” allegations against New Delhi. , Tyagi slammed Pakistan for “exporting terrorism and harbouring UN-proscribed terrorists” and accused it of “bombing its own people”. He also said that Pakistan should be worried about its dwindling economy instead of coveting Indian territory. This came days after an airstrike by Pakistani Air Force in Matre Dara village of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province killed 30 people, including women and children.
