Death penalty for Sheikh Hasina? Worry about this thing is troubling my son

Bangladesh Political Violence: Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajib Wazed has warned that if the ban on Awami League is not lifted, party supporters will stop the February national elections. He is also worried about his mother.

Sheikh Hasina Verdict: The political storm in Bangladesh has once again intensified. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is currently in exile in Delhi, the decision on her case is to be taken today. Meanwhile, her son and advisor Sajib Wazed Joy is afraid that his mother might be given death sentence. Expressing his apprehension on Sunday, he warned that ‘if the ban on Awami League is not lifted, we will not allow the national elections to be held in February.’ He claims that if international pressure is not applied, Bangladesh may again fall into the fire of violence.

Big decision on Sheikh Hasina today

The Dhaka court is scheduled to deliver a televised verdict on Monday, in which Sheikh Hasina may be found guilty of crimes against humanity. Wajed says, ‘We know what verdict they will give, they will convict them, maybe even give them death sentence.’ Efforts are being made to blame 78-year-old Hasina for hundreds of deaths in the crackdown on student-led protests in 2024. But Hasina has called it a complete political conspiracy.

Ban on Awami League and questions on democratic process

The interim government suspended the party registration of the Awami League in May 2024 and also banned political activities. The government claims that this step was taken keeping in mind national security and the ongoing war crimes investigation against senior leaders. But Wajed says that this is an attempt to suppress the voice of democracy and holding elections without Awami League would mean an insult to the rights of the people of the country. He said that the party will not allow such elections to be held at any cost and the protests will intensify further.

Sheikh Hasina is safe in Delhi

Sajib Wazed said that his mother is completely safe in India and she is getting respect like a head of state there. He said Hasina can move around relatively freely in Delhi, but is still extremely cautious due to security reasons. The horrific incident of 1975, in which almost all his family members were murdered, has changed his life forever and even today extra vigilance is maintained regarding his safety.

What did Sheikh Hasina say

Sheikh Hasina has been calling this matter an act of political vendetta since the beginning. They say that the current process of the International Crimes Tribunal violates the basic purpose and rules of war crimes laws. According to Hasina, this entire trial is moving towards a predetermined outcome, the purpose of which is to remove her from politics. She has said that the appeal will be filed only when a democratic government is established in the country, in which Awami League is also a partner.
