DDA launches new housing scheme for government staff in Narela

New Delhi: The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is preparing to launch a new housing scheme exclusively for government employees in a bid to boost the sale of flats in north Delhi’s Narela, a region where the agency has struggled to attract buyers. The DDA Karmayogi Awaas Yojana, scheduled for launch in December, will offer ready-to-move-in HIG, MIG and EWS flats at a 25 per cent discount.

According to officials, the scheme will cover Pockets 9, 6 and 13 in Sectors A1 to A4 of the Narela sub-city, which was recently renamed Vindhyachal. The first phase will focus on Pocket 9, where 1,168 units will be put up for sale, including 272 HIG, 576 MIG, and 320 EWS flats, The Indian Express reported. Located close to GT Karnal Road and the Urban Extension Road (UER) 2, Pocket 9 has recently benefitted from improved road connectivity.

Pocket 6 will offer 936 flats — 232 HIG, 448 MIG and 256 EWS. Pocket 13 will be the largest cluster, with 1,552 flats, including 352 HIG, 776 MIG, and 424 EWS units.

The initiative marks DDA’s latest attempt to offload its massive housing inventory. Narela (Vindhyachal) is one of Delhi’s three major sub-city projects, alongside Dwarka and Rohini, but has lagged behind due to slow development, poor connectivity and infrastructure gaps. Despite construction beginning in the 1980s, large-scale housing availability emerged only after 2010. By the end of 2023, the area still had over 40,000 unsold flats, out of an estimated 70,000 constructed over the years.

Residents have long complained about substandard construction, irregular water supply, inadequate security and the failure of essential civic agencies to provide services. However, officials say the situation is slowly changing. The completion of UER-II in August and the Union Cabinet’s approval of the Rithala–Narela–Nathupur (Kundli) Metro corridor under Phase-IV have revived interest, with completion expected in the next four to five years.

To rebuild the area’s image, DDA has positioned Vindhyachal as a potential education and sports hub by allotting land to educational institutions and sports facilities. With a BJP-led government now in Delhi, DDA officials expect stronger cooperation and faster development in Narela.
