Dazzling Duplantis breaks pole vault world record for 14th time to claim third world championship title

New Delhi: Armand “Mondo” Duplantis continued his record-setting spree by breaking the pole vault world record for a whopping 14th time to win the third world title at the ongoing World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Monday. Duplantis cleared the 6.30 m mark in the Japanese capital to write another golden chapter in his athletics career.

Louisiana-born Duplantis, who represents his mother’s native Sweden, comfortably won his 49th straight meet and fifth straight major title, including the Olympics. After winning the world title, Duplantis, the showman he is, kept the crowd entertained for another drama-filled half-hour and eventually broke the record in his third try.

The legendary Swedish pole vaulter cleared his top height on his third and final attempt. He brushed the bar while falling, which left it bouncing as he leapt off the mat and started the celebrations with second-place finisher Emmanouil Karalis.

“To give you guys this moment, it’s just amazing,” Duplantis said in an in-stadium interview.

Duplantis will receive $70,000 for the victory plus a $100,000 bonus for setting the record at the World Athletics Championships.

Duplantis’ record-breaking journey

The 25-year-old has not looked back since breaking the record for the first time on February 8, 2020, when he cleared 6.17 meters and knocked France’s 2012 Olympic champion, Renaud Lavillenie, off the perch.

Since the record-breaking night five years ago, Duplantis has gone from strength to strength and bettered the record by one centimetre every time.

September 15, 2025, will be a day to remember for the fans present at the Japan National Stadium, for they witnessed the first human to clear the 6.30m barrier.

Following the win, Duplantis shared handshakes and hugs after Greece’s Karalis missed at 6.20 meters to assure Duplantis the win.
