Dawson replaces injured Bashir in England’s XI for 4th Test vs India

New Delhi: England made only one change in their team for the fourth Test against India with slow left-arm orthodox bowler taking the place of injured off-spinner Shoaib Bashir.

Bashir suffered a fracture on the left hand’s index finger on the third day of the third Test at Lord’s and was ruled out for the remaining two Tests of the series, which England lead 2-1.

Bashir underwent a surgery on his left hand after picking up the injury while attempting to stop a strong drive from Ravindra Jadeja.

He took the final wicket on England’s 22-run win in the third match at Lord’s and England were forced to recall Dawson to their red-ball squad for the first time in eight years.

The 35-year-old Dawson has played only three Tests, with the last of which was in July 2017 against South Africa and has made a comeback due to impressive performance in the English County cricket.

“Liam Dawson deserves his call-up. He has been in outstanding form in the County Championship and consistently puts in strong performances for Hampshire,” England’s national selector Luke Wright had said.

The fourth Test begins in Manchester’s Old Traffor on July 23. England had won the opening Test at Headlingley by five wickets after which India pulled level with a 336-run victory in the second game at Edgbaston.

England XI: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope (vc), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (c), Jamie Smith (wk), Liam Dawson, Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer.
