David Warner is retired from international cricket, but the flair and the hunger to score runs are still clearly visible. Warner, who is representing London Spirit in the Hundred, is off to a stunning start, with two back-to-back fifties.
He played a magnificent innings of 71 against Manchester Original to almost pull off an epic chase for his side, but his wicket meant that Spirit fell 10 runs short of the 164 run target.
Warner, however, shattered a huge T20 record during his emphatic knock. The former Australia cricketer leapfrogged Virat Kohli to become the fifth leading run scorer in T20 cricket. Warner has 13545 runs in 419 games. Virat, now sixth, scored 13543 in 412 matches. The record for most runs in T20 cricket is held by Chris Gayle, who made 14562 runs in 463 matches, and Warner is just over a 1000 runs away from overtaking him. A couple of good T20 tournaments might make the record a bit more achievable, and given that Warner is still fit and firing, there is a genuine possibility of beating Gayle’s world record.
Most Runs In T20 Cricket
Player | Matches | Runs | Average |
---|---|---|---|
Chris Gayle | 463 | 14,562 | 36.22 |
Kieron Pollard | 707 | 13,854 | 31.48 |
Alex Hales | 503 | 13,814 | 29.90 |
Shoaib Malik | 557 | 13,571 | 35.99 |
David Warner | 419 | 13,545 | 36.80 |
Virat Kohli | 414 | 13,543 | 41.92 |
Virat Kohli will also have a chance to break Chris Gayle’s record, but unlike Warner, Kohli only plays in the IPL, and he would need two really good seasons to topple Gayle. London Spirit, meanwhile, have started off slowly in the Hundred, winning just one and losing two matches so far.
