Early Marriage and Family Expectations
Neera recalled that her married life initially appeared comfortable despite coming from a modest background. After the birth of her first daughter, relationships within the family remained largely stable. However, circumstances began to change when her mother-in-law was diagnosed with cancer.
During that difficult period, Neera spent considerable time caring for her. She remembered seeking reassurance about the future, only to be told that the atmosphere at home would improve if she eventually gave birth to a son. Those remarks left a lasting impression and reflected the expectations that surrounded her at the time.
Birth of Her Second Daughter Brings Painful Experiences
Several years later, Neera welcomed her second child, Pooja Chopra. Instead of receiving support and celebration, she found herself facing neglect and emotional isolation.
She revealed that during her stay in the hospital, no family member came to visit her for three days. The lack of care became even more apparent when another woman in the hospital offered clothes for the newborn after noticing the situation. The experience left Neera deeply hurt at a time when she needed support the most.
Lack of Acceptance at Home
According to Neera, the difficulties continued after she returned home. She said there was little happiness surrounding the birth of her daughter, and she was expected to resume household responsibilities almost immediately.
The most painful part, she recalled, was the repeated pressure she faced regarding her newborn child. She shared that she was frequently urged to abandon the baby or place her in an orphanage. As a mother, she said, such suggestions were impossible to accept and caused immense emotional distress.
A Decision That Changed Everything
Determined to protect her child, Neera made a life-altering choice. When her daughter was just 21 days old, she left her marital home and stepped into an uncertain future with both of her daughters.
With only ₹81 in her purse, she traveled from Kolkata to Mumbai, where her parents were living. Carrying her infant daughter and holding the hand of her elder child, she arrived with little more than hope and the determination to build a new life.
Searching for Work in Mumbai
Life in Mumbai was far from easy. Neera explained that she was desperately searching for employment and eventually entered a five-star hotel seeking an opportunity.
There, she met a woman named Mona Chawla. Without hesitation, Neera directly requested a job. During their interaction, Chawla asked her to identify anything wrong in the office cabin. Neera pointed out issues with the air conditioner and the cleanliness of the carpet.
Her honesty and attention to detail impressed Chawla, who offered her a position and asked her to begin work the following day.
Building a Better Future
Neera’s first salary was only ₹900 per month. Despite the limited income, she remained focused on supporting her children. She handed most of her earnings to her mother, keeping only a small amount aside for essentials such as milk for her daughters.
For six years, she continued working and managing her responsibilities. Eventually, a better opportunity in Goa significantly increased her income. She described that period as the moment when life finally began moving in a positive direction.
A Promise Fulfilled
Looking back, Neera said her daughters became the greatest source of strength and pride in her life. She expressed gratitude for having them and said she would wish for the same daughters in every lifetime.
She also remembered the promise she made when leaving her home years earlier. At that moment, she told those who rejected her that the child they looked down upon would one day make her proud.
Today, as Pooja Chopra has established herself as a successful actress and former Miss India winner, Neera believes that promise has been fulfilled. Her journey stands as a testament to perseverance, maternal strength, and the determination to overcome adversity against all odds.
