Chennai: With Cyclone Montha strengthening into a severe cyclonic storm over the Bay of Bengal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued significant weather warnings for several districts in North Tamil Nadu. An Orange Alert has been specifically declared for Tiruvallur district, forecasting widespread very heavy rainfall as the system churns towards a projected landfall near Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, tonight.
The cyclone’s influence is already being felt across the region, with the Northeast Monsoon delivering above-average rainfall. The IMD reports that 18 districts in Tamil Nadu have already received up to 57% more rainfall than normal this season. The impending landfall of Cyclone Montha, with wind speeds expected to reach 90-110 kmph, is now amplifying the weather threat, particularly for coastal and northern districts.

Tiruvallur weather: The Chennai’s neighbouring district is under an Orange Alert, with a prediction of widespread very heavy rainfall. Areas like Korattur and Tiruttani have already recorded up to 5 cm of rain in the past 24 hours.
Kanchipuram weather: This district is also bracing for widespread heavy rainfall, with Kanchipuram, Sriperumbudur, and Uthiramerur areas expected to be significantly affected.
Chengalpattu weather: This district can expect heavy rains in several areas including Tambaram, Chromepet, Pallavaram, Chengalpattu, Thiruporur, Seyyur, and Madhurantakam.
Ranipet rain news today: Ranipet district is similarly forecast to receive heavy rainfall throughout the day as the outer bands of the cyclone sweep across the region.

Coastal Warnings Issued as Cyclonic Storm Nears Landfall
The IMD has reiterated severe dangers for maritime activities. Fishermen across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha have been sternly warned not to venture into the sea, as cyclonic winds over the Bay of Bengal are likely to reach 100-110 kmph. Squally winds with speeds reaching 65 kmph are also likely along the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, the Gulf of Mannar, and the Kumari Sea.
As of the latest update from IMD , the severe cyclonic storm Montha was located about 520 km east-southeast of Chennai. The system is moving northwestwards and is likely to cross the coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam near Kakinada tonight, bringing a period of intense weather to the eastern seaboard.
