Dipika Chikhlia, who became a household name after playing Goddess Sita in Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan, has reacted to Sai Pallavi taking on the iconic role in Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana.
While praising Sai Pallavi as a talented actor, Dipika admitted that she is unsure how the actress will look as Sita.
“Sai Pallavi is a phenomenal actor, but I don’t know how she’ll look as Sita,” she said.
Dipika pointed out that audiences already have a strong image of Goddess Sita in their minds. Referring to Sai Pallavi’s curly hair, she said she had never come across such a description in traditional versions of the epic.
“Sita ji with curly hair is not mentioned in Tulsidas’ Ramayan. But if they fit the bill, then it is good,” she remarked.
She clarified that her concern was only about the visual presentation and not Sai Pallavi’s acting ability.
Dipika said portraying Sita comes with enormous responsibility because the character is deeply respected by millions of people.
Recalling her own journey, she said the role brought her immense fame and admiration but also led to typecasting. Even decades later, audiences continue to identify her with Sita.
Sai Pallavi has earlier described the role as a blessing rather than a career choice.
“I don’t think I chose to play Sita Maa. I was blessed to play this role,” she said at a promotional event.
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana.
Dipika had earlier praised the film’s teaser as “very grand.” Her latest remarks show a mix of appreciation for Sai Pallavi’s talent and concern over whether the portrayal will match the traditional image of Sita.
