After a triumphant T20 World Cup 2026, Sanju Samson is struggling in his debut IPL season for Chennai Super Kings. His consecutive low scores, including a failure at Chepauk against the Punjab Kings, have sparked widespread fan frustration and debate about his form.

The wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson had yet another poor outing for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2026 clash against Punjab Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, or Chepauk Stadium, in Chennai on Friday, April 3.

Samson is playing his debut IPL season for Chennai Super Kings after he was traded from the Rajasthan Royals, where he played for 11 seasons, ahead of the IPL 2026 mini-auction last year. The trade deal saw Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran move to the Rajasthan Royals in exchange for Samson, a blockbuster swap ahead of the IPL 2026 season as CSK looked to bolster its batting lineup.

The anticipation for Sanju Samson’s arrival at CSK was intensified following his impressive showing in the T20 World Cup 2026, where he delivered three crucial knocks in a must-win Super 8 against West Indies, semifinal against England, and final against New Zealand, helping India lift the coveted trophy and earn the Player of the Tournament award.

Samson Yet To Make a Mark for CSK

Sanju Samson’s debut season for Chennai Super Kings hasn’t been up to expectations, with the wicketkeeper-batter failing to make a significant impact in the opening matches. In the CSK’s opening match against his former team Rajasthan Royals, the Kerala cricketer was dismissed for just six runs by Nandre Burger in Guwahati.

Despite the failure on his CSK debut, Samson was expected to make a bounce back and make an impact in the five-time IPL champions’ first home match of the season in Chennai, given the crowd support and the familiar conditions at the Chepauk Stadium.

However, Sanju Samson yet again failed to deliver as he was dismissed for just seven runs off seven balls by Xavier Bartlett on the final ball of the second over, putting CSK on the back foot early in their innings.

Despite his success in the T20 World Cup 2026, Sanju Samson couldn’t live up to the hype and expectations as his early dismissal in the opening matches of the Chennai Super Kings’ IPL 2026 campaign left the team struggling for momentum early in the innings.

‘What Sanju Samson Is Up To?’

Sanju Samson’s two consecutive failures in his debut IPL season for Chennai Super Kings, especially his first outing in the yellow jersey at Chepauk Stadium sparks fan frustration and widespread debate, with many questioning whether he can replicate his T20 World Cup form in the IPL.

Taking to their X handles (formerly Twitter), fans and cricket enthusiasts expressed disbelief and frustration at Samson’s struggles, calling his dismissal a ‘big blow for CSK,’ criticizing his shot selection, footwork, and lack of intent, and questioning whether the World Cup hero could regain his form.

Some suggested moving him down the order or experimenting with his batting position to help him find his rhythm.
