Crystal Palace lift Community Shield with shootout win over Liverpool

New Delhi: Crystal Palace prevailed over Liverpool 3-2 on a penalty shootout to win the Community Shield after a 2-2 stalemate in regulation time at the Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday.

Substitute Justin Devenny converted his spot kick to give Palace the trophy, after Mohamed Salah, Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott missed from 12 yards for Liverpool.

Crystala Palace had won the FA Cup last season to book a Community Shield clash with English Premier League winners Liverpool.

Liverpool’s new signing Hugo Ekitike had put the Reds ahead inside four minutes only for Jean-Philippe Mateta to equalise for Palace from a penalty in the 17th when Virgil van Dijk was punished for bringing down Ismaila Sarr.

Another new recruit Jeremie Frimpong restored Liverpool’s lead, as fans commemorated the death of forward Diogo Jota on the 20th minute.

But Palace levelled the score again with 13 minutes of regulation time still to be played as Sarr pushed the ball in past onrushing Liverpool keeper Alisson to stretch the traditional season curtain-raiser to penalties.
