Cristopher Sánchez Signs $104 Million Contract with Phillies for 2027-32 Season

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cristopher Sánchez has secured a six-year contract valued at $104 million for the seasons spanning 2027 to 2032. This agreement includes $20 million in deferred payments scheduled between 2035 and 2044. Sánchez, who is currently receiving a $3 million salary for this season under a four-year contract worth $22.5 million that commenced last year, relinquished $16 million in guaranteed money remaining through 2028 as part of the new deal.

Contract Details

The contract, announced on Sunday, includes a $6 million signing bonus, payable within 30 days of approval by Major League Baseball. Sánchez’s salary will increase progressively, with payments set at $6 million in 2027, $9 million in 2028, $14 million in 2029, $15 million in 2030, and $27 million for both 2031 and 2032.

Additionally, the Phillies will defer $10 million from each of Sánchez’s salaries in 2031 and 2032, to be paid in five installments of $2 million each. The deferred amounts will be payable every July 1 from 2035 to 2039 for 2031’s payment, and from 2040 to 2044 for the 2032 payment.

Conditional Team Option

Sánchez’s contract includes a conditional team option for 2033 at a price of $10 million. This option could escalate to $32.5 million if Sánchez remains off the injured list for 130 or more consecutive days during the 2031 or 2032 seasons. Furthermore, the option price may increase based on his performance in Cy Young Award voting from 2027 to 2032, with various escalators depending on his ranking.

A buyout for the 2033 option will carry the same escalators and amounts. If traded, Sánchez will receive a $1 million assignment bonus and will also be provided with hotel accommodations during road trips.

Performance Highlights

Last season, Sánchez achieved a record of 13 wins and 5 losses with a 2.50 ERA over 32 starts, striking out a career-high 212 batters. In his four full seasons in Major League Baseball, he has an overall record of 30 wins and 21 losses.

With this new contract, Sánchez joins the ranks of other Phillies starters who have secured long-term agreements, including Jesús Luzardo, who recently signed a $135 million contract starting in 2027, Zack Wheeler with $126 million through 2027, and Aaron Nola with a $172 million deal through 2030.

Team Dynamics

Rookie Andrew Painter is also part of the Phillies’ pitching rotation, with team control extending through 2031, having earned a spot as the fifth starter.
