The investigation of the murder case of a 25-year-old woman, whose decomposed body was found buried in a pit in Faridabad, has been handed over to the Crime Branch-DLF, the Haryana Police stated on Monday.
The remand of the main accused, Bhoop Singh — the woman’s father-in-law, who was arrested on June 20– has been extended to three days from Monday, even as the husband of the deceased is absconding, a police spokesperson said.
Singh was arrested on the same day the police recovered the decomposed remains of the victim, Tannu Rajput, two months after she had reportedly gone missing. Bhoop Singh, 54, had allegedly murdered Rajput and dumpedthe body in a pit in front of their house in Faridabad’s Roshan Nagar, reportedly over a dowry dispute.
The police initially registered a case based on a complaint by the woman’s husband, Akash Singh, 28, at the Naveen Nagar police post on April 25, stating that his wife had gone missing. However, the police intensified the investigation following suspicions that Tannu’s in-laws were involved in her disappearance. After Rajput’s body was recovered, additional charges of murder and destruction of evidence were added to the case.
Initial investigations revealed that Tannu Rajput and Arun Singh were married in June 2023, and domestic disputes have persisted since then.
The police claimed that Bhoop Singh entered the victim’s room on the intervening night of April 21 and 22, he was alone with his daughter and Tannu at the house, strangled her with a dupatta, and disposed of the body in a pre-dug soak pit. He then covered the body with soil and summoned a mason the next morning to seal the pit with concrete, the police alleged.
