India’s campaign in the five-Test series against England got off to a challenging start, with a five-wicket defeat at Headingley in Leeds, putting them 0-1 down.
However, despite the loss, one of the standout performers for India was KL Rahul, who showcased tremendous grit and form.
He not only notched up a crucial century in the second innings but also came into the series on the back of another hundred for India A in the unofficial Test against England Lions.
What many didn’t know, though, is the personal sacrifice that went into Rahul’s preparations for the series.
Delhi Capitals head coach Hemang Badani recently opened up about the senior batter’s decision to arrive in England ahead of the main squad, solely to play the unofficial match and fine-tune his game.
Speaking to The Times of India, Badani lauded Rahul’s commitment, revealing that the cricketer chose to leave behind his newborn daughter, Evaarah, to focus on national duty.
“I really liked the fact that he was someone who said, ‘I want to go to England early. I want to play the side game.’ Forget about the hundred he got – that came later. The intent – that’s what matters. The intent to be there early, to be prepared, to be with the side. Let’s not forget, he’s a young father, and I don’t think his child is travelling with him initially. So for him to say, ‘Country over my child’ – that’s a huge call,” Badani said.
He further added, “He could’ve easily said, ‘I’m not playing the side game anyway, I’ll just go straight to the Test match.’ But he didn’t.”
According to Badani, Rahul made it clear even before the series began that he was eager to contribute and support the team during a crucial phase – especially with the absence of veterans like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
“KL made a statement I remember ahead of the Test series: ‘I care for this team, and I want to be here.’ He wanted to go to England. I could see the hunger in his eyes and in his words. In the absence of Rohit and Virat, he becomes the senior-most batter – and he has played that role really well.”
Rahul’s selfless decision and his consistent performances underline his growing stature as a leader within the Indian setup – not just through his runs, but through actions that reflect deep commitment to the national cause.
