Cough syrup tragedy: One more child dies due to toxic ‘Coldrif’ in MP, death toll rises to 22

New Delhi: The death toll in the cough syrup tragedy has risen to 22 in Madhya Pradesh after one more child died allegedly after consuming contaminated ‘Coldrif’. The toxic cough syrup is at the centre of controversy over deaths of children in several states.

Mayank Suryavanshi, a resident of Khajri Antu near Mordongri in the Chhindwara district, died late last night in a hospital in Nagpur where he was undergoing treatment. A total of 22 innocent children have died in the state so far due to kidney failure after allegedly consuming the toxic cough syrup.

Coldrif, a cough syrup manufactured by Tamil Nadu-based company Sresan Pharmaceutical, has been linked to deaths of several children, mostly below the age of 15, in many states. Madhya Pradesh has reported the highest number of children’s deaths allegedly due to the adulterated cough syrup. On Wednesday, the owner of the pharma company, S Ranganathan was arrested by Madhya Pradesh police in Chennai.
