Coolie early box office Day 1: Rajinikanth inks Tamil history in Rs 150 crore gold

‘Coolie’ has done the unthinkable. It hit the ball out of the park as we watched – day after day – its advance booking numbers soared.

Early estimates for its first day – hold your hearts – suggest that the Rajinikanth-starrer grossed around Rs 150 crore worldwide, a first for a Tamil film.

As reported by the trade website Sacnilk, the Lokesh Kanagaraj-directorial grossed around Rs 28-30 crore from Tamil Nadu alone. Add around Rs 16-18 crore gross from Andhra Pradesh/ Telangana, Rs 14-15 crore gross from Karnataka, Rs 10 crore from Kerala and over Rs 75 crore gross from the overseas market – and you will get a figure which looks unreal.

  • North: Rs 2 crore (approx., at least)
  • Total: Rs 150 crore (approx.)

While the final figures are yet to come, from what it seems, to become the biggest Tamil opener ever domestically. The Thalapathy Vijay-starrer grossed around Rs 76 crore and ‘Coolie’ seems to have already gone past this figure in India.

With the Independence Day weekend around, there is only going to be a rampage at the box office – both in India and internationally.

‘Coolie’ has , but the film seems to be critic-proof given the double festivities in theatres.

The film also stars Sathyaraj, Nagarjuna Akkineni, Aamir Khan and Shruti Haasan, among others, in important roles.
