DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran: A statement by the DMK government leader of Tamil Nadu has sparked a debate on North vs South Indian women. DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran has created a major political controversy by comparing women of North India and women of Tamil Nadu.
Maran, a four-time MP from Chennai Central, said that while women in Tamil Nadu are asked to study, their counterparts in North India are asked to “work in the kitchen” and “bear children”.
Addressing students at the Quaid-e-Millat Government College for Women, Maran said, “Our girls should be confident and proud with a laptop, whether you are giving interviews or doing postgraduation. This confidence is there in Tamil Nadu where we tell girls to study and study. What do they say in the North? Girls? Don’t go to work, stay at home, stay in the kitchen, have a child, that’s your job.”
Maran said, “No, this is Tamil Nadu, a Dravidian state, the land of Kalaignar (former chief minister late M Karunanidhi), Anna (former chief minister CN Annadurai), and (Chief Minister) MK Stalin. Here, your progress is the progress of Tamil Nadu. That’s why global companies come to Chennai because everyone here is educated, not just in Tamil, but in English too. They lead. The government plays an important role in the progress of women. We love you always.” There will be more support.”
The DMK MP said that Tamil Nadu is the best state in India and MK Stalin is the best Chief Minister of the country. At the event, Deputy Chief Minister and MK Stalin’s son, Udhayanidhi Stalin distributed laptops to students under the Ulagam Ungal Kaiyil scheme today.
He said, “Today, I am happy to distribute laptops to all of you students. I wish you a very Happy New Year and Pongal. It is often said that when girls complete their education, they make significant contributions to the society. We are proud of all our girl students. This educational institution has a rich history. In 1974, Karunanidhi named this college as Quaid-e-Millat Government College for Women, Opened new buildings, and provided extensive infrastructure.”
