Chennai: The Congress party has announced Christopher Tilak, a young leader from Trichy, as its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu. The nomination process for the 6 vacant Rajya Sabha seats in the state concludes today, and Tilak is set to file his papers.
A rising star in the Congress party, Christopher Tilak has been serving as the secretary of the All India Congress Committee. He has also been handling the party’s affairs in the northeastern states of Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim. His work in these states, particularly in Manipur, has earned him recognition from top leaders, including Rahul Gandhi.
Rajya Sabha Elections 2026: Christopher Tilak emerges as Congress’s dark horse
Tilak’s appointment is seen as a move to give a chance to a younger leader, as senior leaders like P. Chidambaram have already represented Tamil Nadu in the Rajya Sabha. The Congress leadership believes Tilak’s ability to articulate the party’s policies at the national level makes him an ideal candidate to represent the state in Delhi.
The decision to field Tilak comes after senior leaders Thirunavukkarasar, Sudarshana Nachiyappan, and Thangapalu were considered for the seat. However, the party decided to go with Tilak, who has held various positions within the organization.
By giving the Rajya Sabha seat to a young leader like Tilak, the Congress hopes to boost its prospects in Tamil Nadu.
