New Delhi: Prime Minister Modi, during his visit to Assam on Sunday, slammed the Congress for deprecating Assam’s cultural icon Bhupen Hazarika. PM said that the Congress insulted Bhupen Hazarika by saying that the BJP government has been awarding ‘singers and dancers’.
Addressing people in Assam’s Darrang district, PM Modi said, “Yesterday, when I was at Bhupendra Hazarika’s birth anniversary event, CM Hemanta Bishwasharma showed me the video of the Congress President, which deeply hurt me. When the Government of India conferred Bharat Ratna to the brave son of India and pride of Assam, Bhupendra Hazarika, Congress chief said that Modi is giving Bharat Ratna to singers and dancers.”
PM also referred to the address of former Prime Minister Pt Jawaharlal Nehru during the 1962 Indo-China War, where he expressed his helplessness in losing Assam at the hands of Beijing. “After the 1962 war with China, what Pt Jawaharlal Nehru said still hurts the people of the North East,” Modi said.
