Congress announces six candidates for Rajya Sabha polls; renominates Singhvi in Telangana

New Delhi: The Indian National Congress on Thursday unveiled its list of six nominees for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections across multiple states.

In Chhattisgarh, Phulo Devi Netam has been re-nominated, while Karambir Singh Boudh will contest from Haryana. The party has fielded Kangra District Congress Committee president Anurag Sharma in Himachal Pradesh. In Telangana, the Congress has named two candidates — Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Vem Narender Reddy. In Tamil Nadu, M Christopher Tilak has been nominated.

The candidate list received approval from Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and was formally announced by AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, who confirmed that the leadership had finalised nominees for the respective states.

Following his nomination, Vem Narender Reddy expressed gratitude to the party leadership. “My heartfelt thanks to the honorable Sonia Gandhi for announcing me as the Congress Party’s Rajya Sabha candidate, to the Congress Party National President Mallikarjun Kharge, to the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, to AICC Secretary KC Venugopal, to MP Priyanka Gandhi, to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, to Congress Affairs In-charge Meenakshi Natarajan, to Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka, to PCC President Mahesh Kumar Goud, and to the Congress Party High Command,” he wrote on X.

Rajya Sabha elections

The Election Commission of India has scheduled elections to 37 Rajya Sabha seats on March 16 across 10 states, including Maharashtra, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Bihar. The notification was issued on February 26, with March 5 as the last date for filing nominations. Scrutiny will be held on March 6 and withdrawals are permitted until March 9.

Meanwhile, other political parties have also started announcing their nominees for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. The Bharatiya Janata Party has released its first list, naming candidates for nine seats across six states, including Laxmi Verma from Chhattisgarh.

The All India Trinamool Congress has declared four nominees — Babul Supriyo, Rajeev Kumar, Menaka Guruswamy and Koel Mallick. In Odisha, Naveen Patnaik has announced Santrupt Misra and Datteswar Hota as candidates of the Biju Janata Dal.
