In a historic decision, the Executive Board of Commonwealth Games has recommended Ahmedabad, India to host the Commonwealth Games to be held in 2030. This proposal will now be put before the full Commonwealth Games membership, and the final decision will be taken at the Commonwealth Games General Assembly to be held in Glasgow on 26 November 2025. If this happens, India will host the Commonwealth Games for the second time. Earlier in 2010, this event took place in India.
Will Commonwealth Games be held in Ahmedabad?
There is a big reason behind hosting Ahmedabad. In fact, the committee evaluated the candidate cities on a number of criteria, including technical arrangements, experience of the players, infrastructure, governance and alignment with the values of the Commonwealth Games. However, Nigeria’s capital Abuja is also in the race to host. Both Ahmedabad and Abuja have presented impressive and ambitious proposals.
Commonwealth Games will complete 100 years
Let us tell you, the Commonwealth Games is completing 100 years in 2030. The first event was held in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada. At the same time, preparations for Glasgow 2026 are in full swing. In such a situation, Ahmedabad getting hosting will be a historic moment for India. India, the most populous country in the Commonwealth, has a glorious sporting history and its record of success in the Commonwealth Games has also been very strong. India finished fourth in the medal tally in Birmingham 2022.
The Indian Olympic Association had submitted its last proposal on August 29, citing Ahmedabad as the preferred city. At the same time, Nigeria had also submitted its formal bid for this event before the deadline. Now it remains to be seen who among Ahmedabad and Abuja gets the right to host this multi-sporting event.
