Coldest Pickleball Game Ever? Sport Makes Historic Debut in Antarctica

Pickleball made history in late 2024 when it reached Antarctica, with US Air Force pilot Lt. Colonel Jared Wood playing the sport in world’s fifth largest contingent after landing at McMurdo Station, one of the southernmost research hubs in the world.

The moment marked pickleball’s first recorded appearance in Antarctica. Lt. Colonel Wood, who was stationed there as part of a US Air Force mission, managed to rally on the frozen surface, highlighting the sport’s growing global reach.

The playing conditions, however, were not ideal. Extreme cold, ice-covered ground and the absence of proper court markings made competitive play nearly impossible. To maintain traction on the frozen surface, players reportedly used mini-spikes, adapting their footwear to cope with the harsh environment.

Globally, players in colder regions have adapted to playing pickleball in indoor facilities. In cities such as Philadelphia and other cold-weather hubs, the rise of indoor pickleball courts has enabled the sport to continue throughout the winter in climate-controlled settings.

The Antarctica story shows both the adaptability and growing popularity of pickleball, even as environmental conditions pose significant challenges. Such conditions make it impossible to compete however the brief rallies highlights that sport can still be played in the harshest environment.
