Coco Gauff Advances to Round of 16 at China Open, Zheng Qinwen Follows Suit

 American tennis star Coco Gauff secured her place in the Round of 16 at the  for the fourth consecutive year by defeating 16-year-old Chinese player Sun Yingsha with a score of 7-5, 6-1. The two-time Grand Slam champion showcased her skill by winning nine of the last ten games in the match.

Gauff has an impressive record against younger players on the WTA Tour, winning 24 out of 28 matches. Her only loss to a teenager came in 2025 when she faced Victoria Mboko in Montreal, who later went on to become the champion.

After the match, Gauff praised her young opponent, noting, “I think she is much more mature than I was at 16. I felt a bit more challenged, but she is a fantastic player. I knew this match would be tough. Her junior career has been remarkable, and she will surely excel at this level.”

In another match, China’s Zheng Qinwen defeated Czech Republic’s 18th seed Marie Bouzkova with a scoreline of 7-6 (3), 4-6, 7-5 to also reach the Round of 16. Zheng initially gained the first break of the match, but Bouzkova fought back, winning break points in the sixth game. The first set went to a tiebreak, where Zheng triumphed 7-3.

Bouzkova started strong in the second set, taking a 3-0 lead. She thwarted Zheng’s attempts to recover, leading to a decisive third set. In the final set, both players held their serves for most of the time, but Zheng clinched the victory with her second match point. She will face Armenia’s Alina Charaeva in the next round.
