Lucknow: CM Yogi Adityanath on Friday started the process of transferring scholarships directly to the accounts of about 5 lakh students under a major initiative of the Backward Classes Welfare Department. This scheme is completely digital and transparent, so that no student is deprived of education due to financial reasons.

How many students were benefited in the first phase?

In the first phase, scholarships worth ₹62.13 crore have been given to about 2.5 lakh OBC students from classes 9 to 12. Students are receiving the amount directly in their bank accounts. In the second phase, an amount of ₹126.68 crore will be distributed to 4.83 lakh students on Friday. That means overall backward class students will get benefits of more than Rs 5 lakh.

How is the scholarship distribution going on?

This scheme is completely implemented through DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) system. This means that the student’s amount goes directly into his/her Aadhaar-linked bank account. State Minister of State for Backward Class Welfare and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Narendra Kashyap said that the aim of the government is that every student should continue his studies and move forward according to his talent. Now as scholarship distribution is fast, transparent and digital, students are getting benefits quickly and without any hindrance.

How much did the scholarship budget increase?

The total budget of the Backward Classes Welfare Department in 2016-17 was ₹1295 crore. Now in the financial year 2025-26 it has been increased to ₹3124 crore i.e. approximately 2.5 times increase. The budget for scholarship and fee reimbursement schemes alone has increased from ₹1092.36 crore to ₹2825 crore. This simply means that now more students will get benefits in education.

The meaning of this increase is clear: Now the UP government is fully committed towards making education easier for backward class students.
