Class 4 student dies in Delhi after falling into open water tank; owner arrested

New Delhi: A nine-year-old student lost his life after falling into an underground water tank at an under-construction site while playing. The incident occurred on Wednesday, April 8, when the class IV boy was returning home from school.

The deceased, identified as Shreyansh, is a resident of Tughlakabad village, Delhi. His father runs a tea stall at a local market and lives with his parents and elder sister.

Police filed a case against the building owner and arrested him in connection with the matter. Officials reported that Shreyansh was playing with his friends when they entered a nearby under-construction building.

Shreyansh accidentally slipped into an uncovered underground water tank during the course of play and is suspected to have drowned. One of his friends immediately alerted his family, and his father rushed to the spot and managed to pull him out of the tank.

The victim’s father took his son to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared Shreyansh dead on arrival.

Officials said that the construction site was lacking the basic safety measures, as no security guard was deployed in the area, nor was any barricade put around the hazardous area. Additionally, no warning sign board was there.

A police officer said the premises were poorly lit and was extreme unsafe for the residents. The police have registered a case against the owner under Section 106 (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Govindpuri Police Station.

The accused, identified as Jagdish, a 60-year-old, also lives in the same building. He has been arrested by the officials after the incident.
