Claim today itself Rs 78000 crore lying unclaimed in banks, PM Modi himself appealed

PM Modi’s appeal on unclaimed money

The money forgotten by lakhs of people across the country is now returning to them. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that under the government’s ‘Your Money, Your Rights’ initiative, about Rs 2000 crore has reached its rightful owners since October 2025. This campaign was started to return the lost savings and financial assets to those citizens whose accounts, policies or investments were lying unclaimed for years.

Why is ‘Your Money, Your Rights’ initiative necessary?

In the country, a large number of people’s money remains unclaimed in bank accounts, insurance policies, dividends, mutual funds and shares. Many times people do not remember where their money is invested, or after the death of family members, the funds remain unclaimed due to lack of information. PM Modi said that this amount is not just a figure, but the hard work and savings of crores of families.

How much money is lying unclaimed?

Government figures are shocking. About Rs 78,000 crore is lying unclaimed in banks. About Rs 14,000 crore is unclaimed in insurance companies and about Rs 3000 crore is unclaimed in mutual fund companies. Apart from these, about Rs 9000 crore has been lying unclaimed for years as dividend. This amount is the people’s savings, which the government is now running an active campaign to get back.

To return the public’s money to them, different regulatory bodies have created special portals:

  • RBI’s UDGAM portal – for unclaimed bank deposits
  • IRDAI’s Bima Bharosa Portal – To check the amount of old/forgotten insurance policies
  • SEBI’s MITRA portal – for unclaimed funds linked to mutual funds and securities
  • IEPFA Portal of MCA – To Claim Dividend, Shares and Old Investments

With the help of these portals, citizens can now know in just a few minutes whether any of their old money is lying anywhere.

477 facilitation camps set up across the country

To help people, 477 camps have been set up in both rural and urban areas, especially in remote areas. Here officials help people to find and claim their unclaimed amount. The joint efforts of the government, RBI, IRDAI, SEBI and banks have so far helped in returning about Rs 2,000 crore to the people.

PM Modi’s appeal – ‘Take your own rights’

PM Modi said that this is not just a campaign to get the money back, but a step towards a financially empowered India. He appealed to the people to check whether they or any of their family members have lost any old deposits. He said that you must get what is yours.
