Hundreds of students and youth activists who gathered for the Cockroach Janta Party’s ‘Chalo Sansad’ march faced police action at Jantar Mantar on Monday as they attempted to move towards Parliament.
Some protesters allegedly pelted stones, following which police resorted to lathi-charge and used mild force to disperse the crowd. The situation turned tense near the Kerala House entry-exit point after police stopped the protesters from proceeding further, leading to a confrontation between security personnel and demonstrators.
Barricades were also placed at several points across central Delhi routes as security personnel prevented the protesters from moving towards the Parliament area.
Why Did CJP Organise The ‘Chalo Sansad’ March?
The march was organised by the Cockroach Janta Party as part of its campaign to raise concerns related to education and youth welfare. Hundreds of students and young activists gathered at Jantar Mantar before attempting to march towards Parliament to press their demands before lawmakers.
CJP leaders said the demonstration was planned as a peaceful protest aimed at drawing attention to issues they claimed had been ignored by the Centre. The party has been holding demonstrations at Jantar Mantar for the past few weeks, with Monday’s march witnessing a large gathering of students and young people.
Police Stop Protesters From Moving Towards Parliament
The situation escalated when protesters attempted to move beyond the designated protest area. Security personnel set up multiple layers of barricades along key routes to prevent the march from reaching areas near Parliament.
Videos from the protest site showed demonstrators raising slogans as police officials tried to control the crowd. Several women protesters were also seen participating in the demonstration.
Ahead of the march, Delhi Police had increased security arrangements around Jantar Mantar, Mandi House and areas surrounding Parliament. However, officials are yet to issue a detailed statement on the alleged use of force or confirm whether any protesters were detained.
Mobile Internet Services Suspended In Parts Of Central Delhi
Security measures were intensified across parts of central Delhi, with authorities temporarily suspending mobile internet services in some areas.
The restrictions were put in place as officials monitored the situation near the protest site and routes leading towards Parliament. Security personnel remained deployed across key locations as authorities kept a close watch on the developments.
Sonam Wangchuk Sends Message To Young Protesters
The march came as climate activist Sonam Wangchuk continued to remain associated with the broader movement. Wangchuk, who has been admitted to Safdarjung Hospital, is under medical observation.
A medical bulletin issued on Monday stated that his vital parameters remained stable, although doctors continued to monitor certain health indicators.
CJP spokesperson Saurav Das said Wangchuk had sent his wishes to the young protesters participating in the march.
“Sonam ji is stable and continuing his hunger strike. He has sent his very best wishes to the young protesters of this country,” Das said.
Meanwhile, Wangchuk’s wife Gitanjali Angmo appealed to protesters to maintain peace and remain focused on the issues raised by the movement.
