MIAMI (AP) – The Cincinnati Reds triumphed over the Miami Marlins 2-0 on Monday night, thanks to strong performances from Elly De La Cruz and Tyler Stephenson, along with a stellar pitching effort from their bullpen.
Brandon Williamson pitched effectively, allowing only three hits across 6 2/3 innings, while four Reds pitchers combined to deliver a shutout, marking the team’s fourth consecutive win.
Pitching Highlights
Brandon Williamson (1-1) showcased his skills by scattering three hits and striking out four batters, with only one walk. His performance improved significantly from his season debut against Pittsburgh, where he struggled. He maintained a no-hitter until the fourth inning when Otto López managed a two-out single.
Following Williamson, Brock Burke took the mound and struck out Xavier Edwards for the final out in the seventh inning. Anthony Santillan pitched the eighth, and Emilio Pagan closed the game, securing his fourth save of the season.
Key Offensive Contributions
Sal Stewart delivered the Reds’ first run in the fourth inning, hitting a single off Marlins starter Janson Junk. De La Cruz contributed significantly by hitting a one-out double, allowing Stewart’s line drive to bring him home.
Stephenson further extended the lead with a leadoff homer in the eighth inning, marking his second home run of the season. He connected with a slider from Junk and sent the ball over the left-field wall.
Marlins’ Struggles
Janson Junk (0-1) faced challenges, yielding two runs and seven hits over a career-high 7 1/3 innings, while striking out three and walking one. The Marlins’ only significant threat came in the sixth inning when Agustin Ramirez tripled with two outs, but Williamson struck out Jakob Marsee to end that opportunity.
Xavier Edwards went hitless, concluding his 12-game hitting streak that began at the end of the previous season.
Looking Ahead
The Reds are set to continue their series against the Marlins with LHP Andrew Abbott (0-1, 3.09) taking the mound on Tuesday, facing off against Marlins RHP Sandy Alcantara (2-0, 0.00).
