Churchill Brothers aim for home revival against unbeaten NorthEast United in ISL 2026-27

Churchill Brothers SC will host NorthEast United FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda on Thursday, November 5, to open Gameweek 5 of the Indian Super League 2026-27 season.

The newcomers will look to recover from two successive defeats, while the unbeaten visitors seek to extend their momentum and challenge for the league’s summit.

Churchill Brothers began the campaign impressively with a 2-1 win over Mumbai City FC. However, they have since lost 0-4 to East Bengal FC and 2-3 to Punjab FC, conceding seven goals across those two matches. Despite defensive frailties, the Red Machines have displayed attacking potential, notably through Sebastián Gutiérrez, who has netted three goals in as many appearances.

Head coach Dimitris Dimitriou acknowledged that individual defensive errors have been costly. He expressed hope that his team will reduce mistakes and “give the happiness and the smiles back to our fans and our management.”

Dimitriou also recognised the challenge posed by NorthEast United, describing them as “a very good opponent, and a very hard team.” NorthEast so far have scored six goals and remain undefeated after collecting eight points from four matches.

NorthEast United are currently second in the standings following a 1-1 draw against Bengaluru FC, where a 93rd-minute equaliser denied them a win. Under coach Juan Benali, the side has combined attacking threat, led by Moroccan forward Alaaeddine Ajaraie and winger Jithin MS, with defensive solidity, having conceded only twice this season.

Benali, however, is cautious of Churchill Brothers’ pressing and intensity. He highlighted their ability to disrupt play and pose set-piece threats, stating, “We know Churchill Brothers is a team who press you all the time, who doesn’t let you play and when they get the ball, it’s a very good team. They have good players, they look to hurt, good in set pieces, it’s a competitive team.”

This will be the first meeting between the two clubs in the modern league era. Their only previous encounter was in the 2023 Super Cup in Kozhikode, a high-scoring 6-3 victory for NorthEast United.

The match is scheduled to kick off at 5:00 PM IST on November 5 in Fatorda.
