Chunar railway accident: Passengers die while crossing tracks during Kartik Purnima

New Delhi: A tragic accident at Chunar railway station in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur district claimed the lives of four passengers on Wednesday morning.

The passengers got off the Chopan Express on the track and were hit by the approaching Netaji Express, Amit Singh, Public Relations Officer, NCR Prayagraj Division, told PTI.

Passengers were trying to cross the tracks to reach the platform when they were hit by the train. Many of the victims were devotees visiting Sonebhadra for Kartik Purnima rituals.

The identities of the dead people are yet to be confirmed. Eyewitnesses described the scene as horrifying, saying the impact was so dqangerous that the bodies were badly injured.

A police force was deployed at the site immediately. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the families of the victims and directed senior officials to ensure quick rescue and relief operations. He also instructed SDRF and NDRF teams to assist and ordered prompt medical treatment for the injured.

This tragic incident comes just a day after another major train accident in Chhattisgarh that killed 11 people, raising concerns over railway safety during festival travel.
