Christmas Traditions: The festival of 25th December i.e. Christmas is just around the corner. From children to adults, a different enthusiasm is seen in everyone regarding this day. When children wake up on Christmas morning, the first thing their eyes look at are the socks hanging near their bed or on the Christmas tree. But have you ever wondered why Santa Claus chooses only socks to give gifts? There is a very emotional and interesting mythological story hidden behind it. Let us know how this tradition of giving gifts in socks started.
Who was St. Nicholas?
The story of finding gifts in socks on Christmas is considered to be related to St. Nicholas. Saint Nicholas, who lived in Türkiye in the fourth century, was a very kind person. He used his wealth to help the needy and poor children. Today we know him as Santa Claus. It is believed that he used to come secretly in the dark of night and help people so that no one would know.
That magical night of socks and gold coins
According to the legend, there lived a very poor man in a village who had three daughters. Due to poverty, the father did not have money to give dowry for his daughters’ marriage. He was very worried about what would be the future of his daughters. When St. Nicholas came to know about the helplessness of this family, he decided to help. However, he did not want to reveal his identity.
One night Nicholas arrived at the man’s house and threw three bags of gold coins down the chimney. At that time the family members had washed their socks and hung them near the fireplace to dry. The gold coins dropped from above fell directly inside those socks. Next morning when the daughters looked at their socks, they were full of gold coins. There was no limit to their happiness and with that money all three got married with great pomp.
How did this become a global tradition?
After this incident, it became a belief all over the world that Santa Claus would come at night and leave gifts in the socks of children through the chimney. Even today, children hang colorful socks on Christmas Eve in the hope that in the morning they will find candy, chocolates or their favorite toys.
Christmas stockings today
With time this tradition has become a part of fashion and decoration. Now Christmas stockings are especially available in the markets, which people decorate in their homes. Even though people use the fireplace less now, the craze of hanging socks near the bed or on the Christmas tree still persists.
