Choti diwali 2025: The festival of lights celebrated for five days has special significance in Hinduism. Festivals like Dhanteras, Narak Chaturdashi (Chhoti Diwali), Diwali, Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj are celebrated. Short Diwali is celebrated a day before Diwali. Chhoti Diwali is known by many names like Narak Chaturdashi, Narak Chaudas, Russia Chaudas and Bhoot Chaturdashi. This falls on the 14th day of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month. When is Narak Chaturdashi in 2025?
Narak Chaturdashi or Chhoti Diwali will be celebrated on Sunday, 19 October 2025. Worshiping Yama and ancestors has special significance on this day. Chaturdashi date will start on October 19 at 1:51 pm and end on October 20 at 3:44 pm. Since Chhoti Diwali is worshiped at night, the younger Diwali will be celebrated on 19 October 2025 and Lakshmi Puja will be performed the next day, on 20 October.
What to do on short diwali
- On this day, a lamp should be lit facing south direction.
- Yama and ancestors should offer sesame, jaggery, oil and sweets on Narak Chaturdashi.
- Oil, lamps, sesame, sweets, clothes or food can be donated to the poor on small Diwali.
- The broom is also worshiped on small Diwali.
- After sleeping at night, lamps are lit in every corner of the house to remove negative energy.
Importance of Narak Chaturdashi
Narak Chaturdashi or Chhoti Diwali is also celebrated as Hanuman Jayanti in North India. It is believed that Lord Hanuman was born from Anjana’s womb at midnight on this day. Many legends are also prevalent in relation to small Diwali. According to a legend, Lord Krishna killed the demon Narakasura on this day. This day is celebrated in various ways all over India.

Different forms of Narak Chaturdashi
- According to Hindu belief, lighting a fourth lamp at the main entrance of the house on the day of Narak Chaturdashi provides freedom from hell.
- In rural India, this day is celebrated as a crop festival.
- In some parts of India, Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated on this day and they are offered special enjoyment of rice, jaggery, ghee, sesame and coconut.
- This day in West Bengal is called Bhoot Chaturdashi. People here believe that on this day the souls of ancestors come to earth.
- In Tamil Nadu, people keep a fast called “Nombu” on this day and worship Goddess Lakshmi.
