Why worship Lord Chitragupta on Yama Dwitiya? (mythological belief)

The worship of Lord Chitragupta on the day of Yama Dwitiya is prescribed in Sanatan Dharma. There are mainly two mythological beliefs behind this.

Day of Origin: According to mythological beliefs, Lord Chitragupta was born on the second day of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. He is considered to have originated from the mind (mind) of Lord Brahma. The Kayastha community considers him as their Adipurush and their family deity and worship him especially.

Account of deeds: Lord Chitragupta is considered to be the assistant and secretary of Yamraj, the god of death. His job is to keep an account of the auspicious and inauspicious deeds of all the beings born on earth. When a living being dies, it is Chitragupta Maharaj who decides heaven or hell on the basis of his deeds. Since he works closely with Yamraj, he is also worshiped on the day of Bhai Dooj (Yam Dwitiya). This puja is considered important to get the blessings of knowledge, intelligence and success in writing work.

Method of worship of Chitragupta Puja

Chitragupta puja is especially associated with pens, ink pens and ledgers. Businessmen and people associated with writing work perform this puja with devotion. Clean the place of worship and purify it by sprinkling Ganga water. Spread a white cloth on a post and install the statue or picture of Lord Chitragupta. Keep your pen, new notebook/paper, and ledgers nearby. This is considered to be the symbol of Chitragupta ji.

Offer Roli, sandalwood, Akshat (rice), flowers and Panchamrit to Lord Chitragupta. Light a ghee lamp and incense. Start the puja with the mantra ‘Om Shri Ganeshaya Namah’. After this, while meditating on Lord Chitragupta, chant the mantra ‘Om Shri Chitraguptay Namah’ 11 times or 108 times. Offer them fruits and sweets (especially kheer). Perform Aarti of Chitragupta ji. Apologize for sins committed knowingly or unknowingly and distribute prasad.
