Chhath Puja History: Lord Ram and Sita celebrated the first Chhath festival, know its story

Chhath Puja 2025: This year Chhath Puja is being celebrated from 25 to 28 October. This festival is celebrated for four days. This is a festival celebrated mainly in Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Nepal. The fasting women worship Sun God and his sister Chhathi Maiya, who are considered the basis of life. They express gratitude for life and seek blessings of health, prosperity and well-being through rituals such as fasting, bathing in holy rivers and offering Arghya to the Sun.

Today is the most important day of the four-day Chhath Puja. Evening Arghya on this day is dedicated to the setting sun. This sacred moment symbolizes gratitude towards the light, warmth and energy that the Sun provides throughout the day. On this day, families gather at river banks or reservoirs and bring traditional offerings such as thekua (supple basket) filled with sugarcane, fruits and burning lamps. Devotees wade into the water and offer Arghya to the setting sun, praying for the prosperity and well-being of their children and family.

Lord Ram and Sita celebrated Chhath festival

There are many beliefs regarding this holy festival, but the question arises that when was the festival of Chhath celebrated for the first time and how did it start. According to the legend, Lord Ram and Mother Sita returned to Ayodhya after the conquest of Lanka and celebrated the first Chhath festival. It is said that by killing Ravana, Lord Rama had committed the sin of killing Brahma and to get rid of this sin, he had decided to perform Rajasuya Yagya.

Sage Mudgal was called to complete this yagya. Instead of performing yagya, sage Mudgal suggested worshiping the Sun God on the sixth day of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. On the instructions of Mudgal Rishi, Mother Sita observed Chhath fast for six days on the banks of Ganga in Munger, worshiping the Sun God. Due to the effect of the fast, Mother Sita and Lord Ram were liberated from the sin of killing Brahma. The tradition of celebrating Chhath festival started only after this and this festival became a symbol of worship of Sun God and Chhathi Maiya. It is also believed that the footprints of Mother Sita are still present in Munger at the place where she performed this puja.
