Chhath Puja Kharna: Chhath Puja, the great festival of faith, has started from 25th October, which will end on 28th October. During this holy festival, Sun God and Mother Chhathi are worshipped. This great festival which lasts for four days is celebrated with great pomp in Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh. The second day of Chhath Puja is Kharna, which is on 26 October. In Kharna, the devotees observe Nirjala fast from morning to evening and after the evening puja, they break their fast by eating jaggery kheer and roti. This day is considered very sacred. The 36-hour long Nirjala fast begins from this day itself.

Importance of Kharna

Purity:- Kharna means ‘purity’, hence on this day the devotees keep their body and mind completely pure.

Devotion:- This day is a symbol of complete devotion and dedication.

Entry of Chhathi Maiya:- There is a religious belief that Chhathi Maiya enters the house only on the day of Kharna.

Kharna’s puja method and offerings

  • Fast:- A strict fast is observed without water and food from sunrise to sunset.
  • Prayer:- Mother Earth and Chhathi Maiya are worshiped in the evening.
  • Offering:- As prasad, jaggery and rice kheer (rasiyav) and roti are made on an earthen stove using mango wood.
  • Distribution:- After the puja, this prasad is distributed among family members, friends and relatives.
  • Next day:- Arghya is offered to the setting sun in the evening on the third day after Kharna.
