Chhath Puja 2026: Chaiti Chhath festival starts from today, know the worship method and special rules

Rules of Chhath Vrat: Chaiti Chhath Mahaparva, celebrated in the Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month, has started from today i.e. 22 March 2026. This four-day long and sacred festival is celebrated with great devotion mainly in Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh. This festival is dedicated to Sun God and Chhathi Maiya, in which devotees observe a waterless fast for 36 hours and worship with full devotion. Chaiti Chhath 2026 dates

  • March 22: Nahay-Khay (first day)
  • 23 March: Kharna (second day)
  • March 24: Evening Arghya (third day)
  • 25 March: Usha Arghya and breaking of fast (fourth day)

It starts with Nahay-Khay

On the first day, the fasting person takes bath in the morning and consumes pure food. On this day, special care is taken of the cleanliness of the house and completely satvik food is prepared.

Importance of Kharna

On the second day i.e. on Kharna, the devotees keep fast throughout the day and after the evening puja, they take prasad of jaggery-rice kheer and roti. After this the 36 hour waterless fast starts.

Evening Arghya and Usha Arghya

On the third day, Arghya is offered to the setting sun, while on the fourth day, Arghya is offered to the rising sun. This is the most important part of Chhath Puja, where devotees go to the river, pond or ghat and worship with rituals.

Special rules of fasting

It is important to take care of complete purity and cleanliness during the fast. With the resolution of puja, tamasic food is completely prohibited in the house and a satvik lifestyle is adopted. The fasting person does not consume even water for 36 hours. Traditional offerings like bamboo soup, daura and thekua are used in the puja.
