Who is Chhathi Maiya?
Chhathi Maiya is called Goddess Shashthi. According to Hindu belief, she is the sister of Lord Suryadev and is considered the presiding deity of longevity, health and safety of children. Chhathi Maiya was named Shashthi because she is worshiped on the sixth day of the birth of a child. According to the legend, when Lord Brahma created the universe, he created Goddess Shashthi for the protection and growth of his children. Since then, Mata Shashthi started being worshiped as the goddess who protects every newborn.
Relation of Chhath Puja and Chhathi Maiya
In Chhath Puja, along with Sun God, Chhathi Maiya is also worshipped. The fasting women observe a fast and offer water, fruits and Arghya. They believe that by the grace of Chhathi Maiya, children become healthy, long lived and lucky. During this festival, there is a confluence of the energy of the Sun and the purity of the elements of nature, which gives new consciousness to life.
Four holy days of Chhath Puja
- Nahay-Khay (25 October) First of all, the fasting person takes bath and purifies the house and eats satvik food.
- Kharna (26 October) After fasting throughout the day, in the evening, prasad of jaggery-rice kheer and roti is prepared and offered to Chhathi Maiya.
- Evening Arghya (27 October) The fasting people offer prayers to the setting sun and worship the Sun God and Chhathi Maiya.
- Usha Arghya (28 October) On the last day, Arghya is offered to the rising sun in the morning and the fast ends.
