This great festival lasts for four days. This year the great festival of Chhath is starting with Nahay-Khay on 25th October. It will end with offering Arghya to the rising Sun on October 28, but do you know when and how the Chhath fast started? When did the worship of Sun start? If not then there are many mythological stories about it. Let us know about these stories.
According to beliefs, Shri Ram and Mother Sita worshiped Sun God in Treta Yuga, Draupadi and Karna in Dwapar Yuga. Apart from this, a story related to the worship of Chhathi Maiya is related to King Priyamvad, who first worshiped Chhathi Maiya.
Treta Yuga: Lord Ram and Mother Sita worshiped Sun God
According to mythology, Lord Shri Ram came to Ayodhya after killing Lankapati Ravana, but the Lord felt guilty of killing Ravana. To free oneself from this sin, Rajasuya Yagya was performed on the orders of sages. Then Shri Ram and Mother Sita went to Rishi Mugdal’s ashram for the Yagya on his invitation. At the same time, Rishi Mugdal told Ram ji and Mother Sita to worship Sun God on the sixth day of Shukla of Kartik month. Then for six whole days, Ram ji and Sita Mata worshiped Sun God in the ashram of Mugdal Rishi. In this way the great festival of Chhath is related to Treta Yuga.
Dwapar Yuga: Draupadi kept the fast of Chhath
According to mythology, the beginning of Chhath Vrat is also linked with Dwapar Yuga Draupadi. It is believed that Draupadi had observed Chhath fast for the better health and happy life of the five Pandavas. Also worshiped Lord Surya. Chhath Puja is also associated with Danveer Karna. Karna was the son of Sun God. He used to worship Sun God every day. After bathing, he used to go to the river and offer Arghya to the Sun God. If seen in this way, it was Karna who first started worshiping Sun God.
The king had kept a fast while wishing for a son.
A mythological story of Chhath Puja is also related to King Priyamvad. King Priyamvad had no children. In such a situation, Maharishi Kashyap had performed Putreshti Yagya to have a child. Kheer was made to be offered in the Yagya. Later this kheer was given to the king’s wife Malini to eat. It is believed that after eating kheer, Queen Malini gave birth to a son, but he was dead. Seeing this the king felt very sad. He reached the crematorium carrying the dead son’s body and started committing suicide. Then Brahma’s mental daughter Devasena appeared.
She told the king that she was born from the sixth part of the basic nature of creation, hence her name is Shashthi. He also asked the king to worship him and observe fast. After this, King Priyamvad, wishing to have a son, worshiped Shashthi Mata as per the rituals and kept a fast on the Shashthi Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. As a result, a son was born to them.
