Chhath Puja started from Munger

Chhath Puja was first started from Munger in Bihar. According to religious beliefs, Mother Sita performed the first Chhath Puja on the banks of Ganga in Munger, Bihar. After this the festival of Chhath started. According to Valmiki and Anand Ramayana, Mother Sita stayed in Munger for six days and performed Chhath puja. Actually, Lord Ram was guilty of the sin of killing Ravana.

To free himself from this sin, at the request of the sages, the Lord decided to perform Rajasuya Yagya. After this, invitation was sent to Mugdal Rishi, but Mugdal Rishi ordered Lord Ram and Mother Sita to come to his ashram. After this, Mugdal Rishi advised Mother Sita to worship the Sun. Mother Sita observed a fast on the advice of Mugdal Rishi.

Mother Sita worshiped Sun God

On the orders of the sage, Mother Sita worshiped Lord Surya on the western bank of Babua Ganga Ghat in Munger on the sixth day of Kartik month. During the worship of Sun God, Mother Sita offered Arghya to the setting sun towards the west and to the rising sun towards the east. The place where Mother Sita fasted is famous by the name of Sita Charan Temple.

Not only this, the footprints of Mother Sita are still present in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple towards the west and east. Also, there are marks of Soup, Dala and Lota on the stone slab.
