Chhath Puja Rules: Chhath Mahaparva has started from today. Sun God and Chhathi Maiya are worshiped in this festival. Women observe Chhath fast for the long life and prosperity of their children. This year Chhath Puja started from today, Saturday, October 25 and will conclude on Tuesday, October 28. Every day has its own special significance. According to the scriptures, in the month of Kartik, the Sun is in its lowest sign i.e. Libra, hence special worship of Sun God is done. Chhathi Maiya is considered the goddess who protects children, prosperity and family. Nahay-Khay is a ritual performed on the first day of Chhath festival, in which devotees follow this process to purify their body and mind.

Nahay-Khay method

The fasting person takes bath in the Ganges, river, pond or any other holy water source in the morning. After bathing, the devotee wears pure, plain and clean clothes. After bathing, the kitchen and place of worship is cleaned. It is believed that Chhathi Maiya is a symbol of cleanliness and purity, hence there should not be any kind of impurity. On this day devotees eat only once, which is called “Nahay-Khay Ka Prasad”. Food is cooked in bronze or brass utensils and on earthen stoves. Mango wood or cow dung cakes are used for cooking, as these are considered satvik and pure. The meal usually includes pumpkin curry, gram dal and plain rice. Devotees take a pledge to observe Chhath fast on the day of Nahay-Khay and observe purity, restraint and devotion for the next three days.

Kharna fast

Kharna is the second day of Chhath Puja. It is also called Lohanda or Kharna fast. On this day, devotees observe a fast without food or water throughout the day, and in the evening, prepare prasad from jaggery kheer, roti with a special ritual and offer it to Chhathi Maiya. After that, a waterless fast of 36 hours is observed after eating kheer and fruits.

The third day of Chhath Puja is considered to be the most special and grand. It is called “Sandhya Arghya” or “Sandhya Ghat Puja”. On this day, devotees offer Arghya to the setting sun in the evening.

The fourth day of Chhath Puja is the last and most sacred day of this great festival. It is called “Usha Arghya”, “Bhor Arghya” or “Sunrise Arghya”. On this day, devotees conclude their 36-hour fast by offering Arghya to the rising sun in the morning and Parana is performed.
