Chhath Puja 2025: 4-day long festival Chhath starts from tomorrow, know the date of Nahay-Khay, Kharna and auspicious time of Arghya.

Chhath Puja 2025 dates: Chhath Puja, the great festival of faith and folk festival dedicated to Sun God and Chhathi Maiya, is starting from 25 October 2025. This four-day festival is a symbol of folk culture and love for nature, which is celebrated with great enthusiasm mainly in the Terai regions of Bihar, Jharkhand, Eastern Uttar Pradesh and Nepal. This year Chhath Puja will start with Nahay-Khay on 25th October and will end with Usha Arghya on 28th October.

Important dates of Chhath Puja 2025

  • First day: 25th October Nahay-Khay
  • Second day: 26 October Kharna
  • Day 3: 27 October Evening Arghya (to the setting sun)
  • Fourth day: 28 October Usha Arghya (to the rising sun)

Nahay-Khay (25 October)

Chhath Mahaparva starts with Nahay-Khay. On this day Vrati (women observing fast) take bath in Ganga or any holy river. If river is not available then the entire house is cleaned and purified by taking bath in holy water at home.

Method: On this day, the fasting person consumes satvik food only once. Rock salt is used in food. Traditionally gourd (pumpkin) vegetable, gram dal and rice are consumed. Even while cooking food, special care is taken of cleanliness and purity.

Kharna (26 October)

The second day of Chhath is called Kharna, which is also called ‘Lohanda’. The 36-hour waterless fast begins from this day itself.

Method: The fasting person observes waterless fast throughout the day. In the evening, jaggery kheer (rasiya) and ghee coated rotis are prepared using mango wood on an earthen stove. After worshiping the Sun God, the devotee first takes this Prasad. After accepting the Prasad of Kharna, the fasting person gives up food and water till offering Surya Arghya the next day.

Evening Arghya (First Arghya – 27 October)

The most important day of Chhath Mahaparva, when Arghya is offered to the setting sun.

Method: The fasts and devotees go to the banks of the river or pond carrying offerings made of thekua, fruits, sugarcane, coconut, and various types of seasonal fruits in soup or bamboo baskets. On this day, standing in water, the last rays of the sun are offered Arghya with water, milk and flowers. The importance of offering Arghya to the setting sun is that even the difficult times of life should be welcomed.

Usha Arghya (Second Arghya – 28 October)

Chhath festival ends with Usha Arghya (offering to the rising sun) on the fourth day.

Method: The devotees and family members gather again at the same place where the evening Arghya was offered. Standing in water before sunrise, Arghya is offered to the first ray of the sun. After offering Arghya, the devotees break their fast with raw milk and Prasad, which is called Parana. After this the Prasad is distributed among the families and the neighbourhood.

Importance of Chhath Puja (Chhath Puja significance)

Chhath Puja has great importance from both religious and scientific point of view. This festival is dedicated to the direct deity Surya Dev, who is a symbol of energy, life and health. Worshiping the Sun provides relief from skin diseases and other diseases. Chhathi Maiya (Shashthi Devi) is also worshiped in this festival, who is considered the goddess who protects children and fulfills wishes. This fast is observed for the attainment of a child, happiness of the child and prosperity of the family. Chhath festival is a symbol of purity, cleanliness and dedication towards nature. All the items used in it are natural and the devotees adopt a satvik lifestyle. This four-day long festival is not only a religious ritual, but it also becomes a medium to establish a deep connection with family, society and nature.
