Why is mango wood used for making Prasad?
An earthen stove is made on the evening of Kharna. Mango wood is used in this stove. Mango wood is considered pure and virtuous. It is believed that Chhathi Maiya is very fond of mango wood, hence mango wood is used to make Prasad on the occasion of Chhath. Making Prasad from this wood brings positive energy to the house.

Method of Kharna Puja
- On the day of Kharna, fasting women prepare jaggery and rice kheer on a new earthen stove.
- This kheer is made from jaggery, rice and milk in a brass vessel.
- Rotis, puri or thekua are also made from wheat flour.
- This kheer is offered to Chhathi Maiya.
- After this, everyone consumes it as Prasad.
- After this, the 36-hour Nirjala fast will begin.
