Chennai: After a series of holidays earlier this week due to persistent heavy rainfall, schools and colleges in Chennai and Tiruvallur districts are set to reopen today. Educational institutions in these districts, along with several others, had been closed from Tuesday through Thursday as Cyclone Ditwah—though significantly weakened—brought substantial rains to coastal and interior regions of Tamil Nadu.
The cyclone, which impacted Sri Lanka and Indonesia, weakened into a deep depression upon approaching the Tamil Nadu coast. It subsequently settled along the coastline, triggering heavy to moderate rainfall in Chennai, the delta districts, and various interior regions over the past few days. Notable rainfall measurements included 23 cm in Manali New Town and 18.9 cm in Ennore recorded earlier this week.
According to the Chennai Meteorological Department, the deep depression over the coastal areas of North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry has now further weakened. However, a low-level circulation persists over the southeast Arabian Sea, indicating that rain is likely to continue across Tamil Nadu for the next few days.
Tamil Nadu weather forecast and district alerts
The forecast for today predicts light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning at a few places across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. Specifically, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Tenkasi districts are likely to experience heavy rain at isolated places.
Chennai weather today
In Chennai, the sky is expected to be partly cloudy with a possibility of light to moderate rain and thunderstorms in some areas. The maximum temperature is projected to be between 28°C and 29°C, with a minimum around 24°C to 25°C.
Decision on Chennai school holiday
While the previous days of heavy rain led to waterlogging in low-lying areas and even on some school campuses, no official announcements regarding fresh holidays for schools or colleges have been issued for today in any district.
The decision to declare a holiday due to inclement weather rests with the respective District Collectors, who assess local conditions. Parents, students, and institutions are advised to monitor official communications from district administrations and the Education Department for any last-minute updates regarding the status of classes.
